Our journey begins with the pilot project phase of the Math Court, where for each cohort, we are focusing on the first module, which is a core module for each group: Computation. The specific math objectives and initial legal scenarios detailed below are central to this foundational phase. As more modules are rolled out, more specific legal issues relating to both adult and student groups will be explored, building upon the skills and understanding gained here.
Duration (Applicable to All Learners): 6 – 8 weeks.
Core Mathematical Objectives (Applicable to All Learners):
(a) By the end of the Computation module, all participants will be able to:
(b) State the place value and face value of digits and numbers.
(c) Use the calculator to perform computations using the four basic operations with real numbers.
(d) Convert among fractions, percentages, and decimals.
(e) Solve problems using times as stated on 12-hour and 24-hour clocks.
(f) Express a value to a given number of decimal places.
(g) Solve problems using traditional rounding and approximation of numbers.
(h) Calculate any fraction or percentage of a given quantity.
(i) Express one quantity as a fraction or as a percentage of another.
(j) Compare two given quantities using ratios.
(k) Divide a quantity in a given ratio.
(l) Solve problems involving fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, rates, proportions, and arithmetic mean.
Legal Issues:
(a) For Module 1, some Landlord and Tenant issues will be the main focus of the adult learners.
(b) Students will be exposed to some of the legal issues surrounding School Bullying as they progress through Module 1.
The Math Court transcends traditional learning by offering an immersive and practically relevant educational experience that prepares learners for real-world challenges while comprehensively addressing past struggles with mathematics.
